The Concept

Nestled within San Jose’s vibrant downtown Hensley Historic District, a charming craftsman house presented a unique opportunity for transformation. While compact, its homeowners envisioned expanded possibilities for their passions and future needs. This led to the design and construction of a detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), meticulously crafted to serve as a versatile space for creative pursuits of pottery and fitness, with the foresight to transition into a fully independent living unit if desired. A crucial aspect of this project was the careful consideration of the Hensley Historic District’s regulations and the desire to maintain the architectural integrity of the neighborhood. This thoughtful approach demonstrates a commitment to preserving the unique charm of San Jose’s past while introducing modern functionality.

The Remodel

Beyond the ADU, the main house also underwent significant improvements. A complete bathroom remodel was undertaken, resulting in a refreshed and elegant space. A particularly personal touch in this renovation was the incorporation of tiles created by the homeowners in their new pottery studio, adding a unique and handcrafted element to the design. Furthermore, a creative reorganization of the existing floor plan allowed for the ingenious addition of a new half bath, significantly enhancing the convenience and functionality of the home without compromising its original layout. These interior updates, combined with the innovative ADU, elevate the property to new levels of comfort, style, and practicality.
