Modern house exterior with gray concrete, wood panels, and autumn tree

The Concept

An outdated 1970s addition had previously consumed the entire backyard, diminishing natural light to the interior and creating a dim kitchen and dining area. Our unique approach involved actually reducing the square footage. A key advantage of California living is the ability to utilize a backyard as an extended living space, perfect for dining, entertaining, and lounging for most of the year.

The Footprint

To maximize natural daylight within the home’s core, we installed two large bi-folding patio doors in both the kitchen and dining room. This established a strong connection to the outdoor entertainment area, which features an exterior kitchen and a fire-pit seating space.

The exterior of the house was redesigned to complement a modern landscape project. A cedar rain screen leads guests to the front door – shifting the visual emphasis to the front door and reducing the prominence of the garage. The cedar gave the facade a modern, warm feel and differentiated the house from its neighbors.

The house’s exterior was reimagined to complement a modern landscape design. A cedar rain screen now guides guests to the front door, shifting visual emphasis and reducing the garage’s prominence. The cedar not only gave the facade a contemporary and warm aesthetic but also distinguished the house from its neighbors.
